Help & FAQ

Welcome to the RemoteFriends help section. Here, you should be able to find an answer to most of your questions. If there is something you are having a problem with, or want to report a user/post, then please contact us at contact@remotefriends.com

General

That’s easy! Just press the ‘Members’ button at the top of the screen. You’ll be taken to the main directory, with the members being sorted by ‘Last Active’ by default.

You can instead sort by newly registered members, or alphabetical. However Last Active will show who is still using the site, as well as who is currently online. Near this drop-down is a search box, where you can type in any keyword.

If you want to further your search, then hover over the ‘Members’ button at the top of the screen and choose ‘Advanced Search’.

Open the Advanced Search by selecting it when hovering over the ‘Members’ button in the navigation menu. Or go here. In the form, you will find every available field that you can search through.

That means you can limit your search to 23 Year Olds who live in the United Kingdom and like Harry Potter movies for example. It’s possible to find members who have some of the exact same interests as you.

In this form, not ever field needs to be filled in. Just ones where you want to find similarities. It’s a great way to filter your search to gaming partners, travel friends etc.

We did indeed! We have 6 different ‘categories’ of people. That means you can find friendships, relationships, pen-pals, language exchange, travel partners and gaming friends.

To do this, head to the advanced search by hovering over the ‘Menu’ button at the top of the screen. If you’re looking for a travel partner, then select that option in the ‘Looking for’ field.

You can then further your search. If you want to find someone to visit Germany with, enter Germany in the ‘I want to visit’ field. That way, anyone who has placed Germany in their countries they want to visit list, and have said they are looking for a travel partner will show up.

A lot of people hate just ‘Hi’, or ‘Hi how are you’. Most members are looking for an introduction that some thought has gone in to! Make sure to read over a members profile and find something interesting about them, or similarities that you can both talk about.

If you have received an inappropriate message, spotted an image which shouldn’t be allowed on the site, or any other type of content posted by another member that you think should be removed, please let us know right away.

Email us at contact@remotefriends.com with a link, the issue and proof if possible.

To report a user, head on over to our contact form. From our drop-down list, choose the ‘I need to report a user/something’ option and fill out as many fields as possible. That way, we can check the report in depth and take appropriate action. If necessary, you should also block the member.

When you block a member, you will no longer show up in members directories for that member, they can’t view your profile and they can’t contact you directly. It is possible however that they may see your activity on others pages, groups and activity feeds.

To block a member, head to their profile and press the ‘Block User’ button located right below their username. If you want to unblock them, you can do so from the account settings.

Your Profile

Whilst logged in, you can edit your profile by heading to your profile settings. There are multiple ways to do this.

Firstly, you can hover over the ‘Profile’ option in the top bar which is darker purple and choose ‘Profile Settings’. Otherwise, whilst viewing your own profile, hover over your avatar which is near the Overview, Info, Walls etc tabs and choose ‘Profile Settings’.

Here, you can edit all of the information on your profile by using the navigation menu located in the bottom left of the screen.

In the bottom left of the ‘Profile Settings’ screen, you can see some navigation options, including change profile picture and cover image. Upload the desired image, crop it and save.

Please note that any inappropriate images will be removed and your account may be terminated. This includes anything that could be seen as adult content, gory, advertisements and more.

When you first sign up, you will be asked for your name, age, country and city. This information is stored in the ‘Profile Settings’ area under ‘Profile Information’. Refer to the ‘How do I access my profile settings’ tab above.

When you access your profile settings, you will be taken to the ‘Profile Information’ screen where you can change these options. Also make sure to edit your “My Information” setting by choosing the option in the bottom left navigation menu.

The Overview tab is basically the home page for your profile. It contains an about me section and some other content that you can choose such as quotes, slideshows and more.

To fill this section, you need to head to the ‘Widget Settings’ area. Hover over ‘Profile’ in the top bar (darker purple) and choose the Widget Settings option. Otherwise, hover over your profile drop-down located on your profile near the top right near the messages button and choose it from there.

Fill in the About me section, as well as other available sections by accessing them in the navigation menu in the bottom left of the Widget settings area.

Firstly, you will need to access your ‘Profile Settings’. Take a look at the  top tab in this section labelled ‘How do I access my profile settings?’.

Once on the Profile Settings page, press the ‘My Information’ option located in the bottom left navigation menu. Fill out all of the fields to the best of your ability so that other members who share similar interests can find you. Save your changes.

Your Wall is where you can post status updates, photos, quotes and slideshows. It’s a good way to keep your friends and other members who look at your profile up to date. Some posts are automatically made to your wall, such as when you update your profile picture or when you join a group.

These wall posts can be deleted at any time by pressing ‘Delete’ on a post.

By pressing the small arrow in the top right of a post (when hovering in that area), you can pin a post so that it always sticks to the top of your profile. Otherwise, you can bookmark items from your own wall or others which will be saved in the Bookmarks section, which can be accessed from the top bar.

You can upload photos to your profile that won’t replace your cover image or profile picture. These may just be other pictures of you, your pets or maybe some photos from your day to day life.

Photos can be uploaded and accessed by going to the ‘Media’ tab on your profile. Only photo uploads are possible, video and audio have been disabled for privacy reasons.

When uploading an image, you can choose some privacy settings. That way, you can limit who can see your photos. You can choose to set these to Everyone, Members, Friends or Just you.

Other members are able to like and comment on your photos. Whilst you can also delete photos from your profile at any time.

Friends

To add a friend, browse the persons profile who you want to friend. In the top right corner, you will see an ‘Add Friend’ button. You can type in a message to go with the friend request, the other member will then have to either accept or decline your request.

Removing a friend is the same as adding them. Head to the members profile, and choose the ‘Unfriend’ option located in the top right of the screen.

We list 5 friends in your profile on the right hand side. However, to access the full list, head to your profile and open the ‘Friends’ tab. From here, you can see anyone you are friends with as well as any requests you currently have.

When you receive a friend request, it should show up in your notifications. If it doesn’t, then you can access your list of requests from your profile.

Head to your profile and open the Friends tab. In the sub-menu inside the tab, you should see the ‘Requests’ button. Here, you can choose to accept or decline any requests you have.

Adding friends doesn’t have too many benefits. Firstly, you’ll be able to see any content that they have set to ‘Friends only’. You’ll also show up in the friends list in the bottom right of the screen, making it easier to stay in contact. Friends can also invite you to groups, and there is a special filter in the activity feed, so you can keep up to date with your friends lives.

Groups

On other members profiles, you can see a list of groups they are in on the right hand side of their profile. Maybe they are in one that is of interest to you. Otherwise, head to the Groups section of the website. Here, you can use the search bar to search for keywords, or browse groups by newest, most popular etc.

To create a group, head to the main Groups page on the website, found in the top navigation bar. From there, you can choose to create a group. Please search for the group you want to create first to make sure that it doesn’t already exist.

If you are able to join a group (some groups are set to private, or invite only), then you will see a join button in the groups directory. Whilst on the groups homepage, there is a join button located in the top right.

Head to the groups page, and look for the ‘Leave Group’ button, located in the top right of the page.

Each group has a home page, where there is a wall that you can post messages and pictures too.

However, there is also a forum option, which is determined by the group administrator. If enabled, you can create posts and join in on other discussions by heading to the ‘Forum’ tab.

Yes! If the administrators have allowed it, you will see an ‘Invite’ button located in the groups navigation menu. There, you can invite friends to join.

To update a groups settings, you must be a group administrator. Head to the group, choose ‘Manage’ located in the navigation menu. From here, you can change the groups name, settings, photo, cover image, manage members, manage the forums and delete a group.

To remove a member, you need to be a group administrator or moderator. Press the ‘Manage’ button on the groups homepage, then choose ‘Members’. Search for the member you want to remove. Use the buttons to kick, ban or remove from the group.

To delete a group, you must be the group administrator. Head to the homepage of your group and press ‘Manage’. From there, you can press the ‘Delete’ button located on the right.

Messages

We want to ensure that you remain safe, and don’t end up making any mistakes when speaking to other members. Here are some things we suggest you do:

  1. Never give out your password or personal information to anyone. If you’re taking part in snail mail, get to know the person before giving out an address. Or set up a PO Box.
  2. Don’t send personal/explicit photos, you don’t know who is on the other side of the screen or what will happen with the photos.
  3. Do not click any suspicious links sent to you. It’s possible that one of these links could contain a harmful virus or malware.
  4. If anyone is making you feel uncomfortable or you think is being inappropriate, please email us immediately with the users name and information.

There are a few ways to initiate a conversation with another member. The first way being to open up their profile and press the message button located in the top right of the screen. This will take you to your own message area, with a new thread ready to be made.

Otherwise, you can head to your own profile and open the ‘Messages’ section. You will need to input the other members username manually though this way. Press the + button in the messages section, and begin typing another members name, wait for the drop down and select them.

Unfortunately, we do not allow group chats or messages to happen. You can only speak to one individual at a time. This is because of how easy it would be for a spam account to sign up and mass message everyone on the website. We will consider revising this in the future.

Yes, of course! If a message is important, hover over it and press the little star on the right hand side. When you go back to the messages home screen, you can press the star icon at the top. In here is a list of messages you have saved.

You can’t remove individual messages, you can only remove entire conversations. To do so, head to your messages section and hover over a conversation thread. From there, press the small x icon to remove the conversation from your list.

Account Settings

You can access your account settings whilst logged in. In the account settings area, you can control notifications, emails and data.

Hover over the ‘Profile’ option on the top bar, which is a darker shade of purple. From there, choose Account Settings. Alternatively, you can head to your own profile, hover over your profile image on the right hand side and choose the option from there.

Whilst you are in the account settings area, choose the ‘Change Password’ option in the bottom left of the screen. You will need to enter your current password, as well as your new password.

Yes, it’s the first option in the account settings section. Or you can press the account settings button located in the bottom left of the page.

In this area, you can control when you should receive emails. By default, all options are set to enabled.

To comply with GDPR, you can request a copy of all the data currently tied to your account. This includes the information you have entered, messages, forum entries etc. You can only request this data through your own account through this menu only. Data exports are not instant, and may take a few days to complete.
